What is Sensory Integration?

​Sensory Integration is the way the brain receives, organizes, and responds to information from the senses.

 

What are your senses?

  1. Sight

  2. Sound

  3. Smell

  4. Taste

  5. Touch

  6. Vestibular (Spatial relation in relation to gravity that affects balance and posture)

  7. Proprioception (Body awareness in relation to our joints and muscles that affects areas such as motor planning, coordination, and using appropriate force)

  8. Interoception (internal senses like hunger, thirst, and urge to use the bathroom)

What does sensory processing difficulties look like?

  • Overly ​sensitive to noises or other senses

  • Sensory seeking behaviors

  • Slouched posture

  • Bumping into things or people often

  • Using too much or too little force when playing

  • Picky eating

  • Emotional Dysregulation

  • Trouble with changes, transitions, and completing daily routines

What can sensory integration therapy help with?

It can help the nervous system process sensory information more effectively in order to gradually building the child’s ability to respond to sensory input in a more organized way. It can improve:

  • Motor skills and coordination

  • Body awareness

  • Attention and focus

  • Emotional regulation

  • Tolerance to sensory input (such as touch, sounds, or movement)

  • Confidence and participation in daily activities

Are all behavior issues a sensory processing issue?

Not necessarily!
